A red flag means swimming is not allowed. An orange flag means be careful, swimming will be supervised, but remains dangerous. A green flag means that the sea is calm and it's time to have some fun. You should also be aware that there is a purple flag. This is to indicate polluted water and swimming is therefore not allowed.

Swim only when a lifeguard is on duty and in areas designated for swimming. All swimmers should respect the rules for swimming and follow the direction of the lifeguard. Never swim alone. Always swim within your depth, parallel and close to shore. Swimming in the sea takes different skills, so before you get your feet wet, it’s best to learn how to swim in the surf. If you don’t know how to swim you should learn and restrict to paddling in the shallow water only and in the presence of a lifeguard.

Always bathe where there is a lifeguard, never in forbidden or dangerous areas. Families should stay on lagoon beaches. Do not stray far from the beach, beware of currents and follow all the lifeguard’s instructions. Wear reef shoes to protect your feet from the coral reef and sea urchins in the lagoon.
