There are still more than 1,000 windmills scattered throughout the country, with many still in use. Some of the best-known Holland windmills include those in UNESCO Sites Kinderdijk, Zaanse Schans and Schiedam. The 19 windmills help to control and prevent flooding in the region, but are as revered for their engineering as they are for their beauty. Each year, vacationers flock to the Kinderdijk windmills to learn more about their unique and significant history. You can go inside 2 of the museum windmills and stop by the Wisboomgemaal Visitors’ Centre and the Windmill Workshop during your visit.

By the middle of last century, the Kinderdijk windmills lost their original function in water management. Pumping stations took over the job. Nearly all the mills of Kinderdijk UNESCO World Heritage are inhabited by at least one person in possession of a miller’s degree. They are authorised to use these impressive machines for actual milling. Making ends meet, however, still requires a ‘regular’ job.

The Kinderdijk windmills are still kept in good working order and can be put into action any time, either for show or in case of power failure. During WWII, diesel shortages meant that the Dutch couldn’t generate enough power, therefore, they were forced to return to wind power to keep their feet dry. Today, the historic mills at Kinderdijk can still sometimes be seen turning on national and regional Mills Days.

Today the windmills are still kept in working order, but they are no longer used for water management. Fuel shortage during World War II briefly forced the water boards to return to wind powered water pumping, which proved to be the last hurrah for the windmills. After the war all mills were decommissioned and the millers released from their contracts. The main water works are provided by two electric pumping stations near one of the entrances of the windmills site.
