De brick Nederwaard windmills were decommissioned, although the millers and their families were allowed to continue to inhabit them. During the nineteenth century sinking land and rising water levels required more water pumping capacity than the mills could provide. The Nederwaard and Overwaard water boards had steam powered pumping stations built.

Jan lives in Nederwaard’s number 4 windmill. Arie and his family occupy the fifth windmill on the Nederwaard side. At their heyday in 1941, as many as ten of the Kinderdijk mills were inhabited by members of the Hoek family. Nearly all the mills of Kinderdijk UNESCO World Heritage are inhabited by at least one person in possession of a miller’s degree. The brothers grew up together in the mill where Jan lives today.

The inhabitants of Kinderdijk live in the windmills. Petra Hoek, the 10th generation of her family to live at mill number five. We’ve been living here since 1747. Peter Paul Klapwijk, a second resident behind the campaign. The tourists are very important for the area, but they are becoming too much.
